Capital murder charges filed in deadly shooting

-

An 18-year-old has been charged with capital murder in a fatal shooting in a Near Northside residential alley.

Isaiah Murphy is accused of shooting and killing Gerardo Lopez on Feb. 28. A resident found the man lying dead in the alley with several gunshot wounds to his torso, police said.

Lopez was found after 10 p.m. between the 4700 block of McEwen and the 4700 block of Siegel. His pockets were turned inside out, and his cellphone was missing, according to Harris County District Clerk records. Lopez’s son said he believes the person who killed his father took the phone.

A witness told police that he saw a slender man with cheek-length dreadlocks leaving the area where gunshots were reported. He followed the man, who ran to the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority platform on the southeast corner of Fulton and Cavalcade.

The witness stopped his car across the street and asked the man why he was shooting in the alley between houses. The gunman yelled something to the effect of, “I’ll do it to you, too,” according to court records.
