Advice from Jennifer Kalinsky

If you’re planning to flip a house, use classic and current styles. Don’t try to show your own personality.

Home buyers aren’t there to buy your furniture, but funky or quirky décor may keep people from making an offer. Also, if your home’s décor looks great, some buyers may want to buy your furniture, too.

Open things up, especially in the kitchen. What’s trending now are big open spaces — kitchens open up to family rooms and even dining areas — so family can spend more time together and entertaining friends is easier.

Kitchen cabinets matter. Popular styles include Shaker-style painted white, open shelves or even cabinets on legs — rather than on the floor — so they look more like furniture.

Have a good vision and good subcontractors. Good subs will offer ideas that help the project and potentially save you money. Don’t be afraid to ask what they think; after all, if you don’t like their ideas you don’t have to use them.
