SEVEN THINGS WE KNOW ABOUT THE BOMBINGS

-

1. This is the fourth bombing in Austin this month. The first bomb was on March 2, two more followed on March 12, and Sunday night’s bombing is the fourth. 2. The bombings originally appeared to target ethnic minorities. The first bomb killed Anthony House, 39, and the second bomb killed 17-year-old Draylen Mason and injured his mother, all three of whom are black. The third bomb critically injured a 75-year-old Latino woman. The two men hurt in Sunday’s bombing are white, but police are not ruling out whether race was a factor. 3. The first three explosions were limited to neighborhoods on the east side of Austin in predominately black or Latino neighborhoods. All three were detonated east of I-35, something of a racial dividing line in the city. The fourth attack happened across town in southeast Austin. 4. Up until Sunday, all of the attacks were in the form of package bombs left on doorsteps. They were detonated either when disturbed or opened. Sunday’s attack was different: The bomb went off when the two men hit the tripwire, causing the bomb to explode. 5. An unprecedented number of agents are focused on solving this case, including some 500 FBI agents and hundreds of agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. 6. Police said they have chased and closed some 500 tips in the bombing case. Police are urging people who think they might know something to report more tips. Authorities are offering $115,000 in reward money for information that leads to an arrest. Anyone with tips or information related to the case is encouraged to contact the TIPS Hotline at 512.572.TIPS (8477). 7. Authorities are asking that the bomber call them at 911 to open up a dialogue.
