Couple to remarry 50 years after divorce

-

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A half century after getting a divorce, a Kentucky couple plans to get married again.

The Lexington HeraldLeader reports 83-yearold Harold Holland and 78-year-old Lillian Barnes will exchange wedding vows on April 14 in Lexington. Their grandson will perform the ceremony at a Baptist church.

Holland and Barnes first were married on Christmas Eve in 1955. They had five children — Miriam, Timothy, Larry, Laura and Mark.

Holland says his job kept him away from the family prior to the breakup. After they split up, they stayed friendly.

Both remarried, and their spouses died in 2015.

After that, Holland and Barnes attended a family reunion, and by last December, they were talking marriage again.

Holland said, “We decided we want to walk the last mile together.”

Holland said he has learned what to do differently with what both hope will be their final marriage. It’s simple, really. “We’ll go do whatever we want to, whenever we want to do it. I’ll take her wherever she wants to go.”

“We have a lot in common,” Barnes added.

“I don’t think we ever lost that love, to tell you the truth,” echoes Harold.

But there’s a bit of tart in this sweet romance.

Barnes said Holland “didn’t think I’d ever speak to him again. He got fooled.”
