Gregorius’ 2 HRs carry Yankees

NEW YORK — Didi Gregorius hit a pair of threerun homers and drove in a career-high eight RBIs, and the New York Yankees overcame five strikeouts by Giancarlo Stanton in his first game in pinstripes to beat the Tampa Bay Rays 11-4 on Tuesday in Aaron Boone's chilly first home opener as manager.

Starting his fourth season as Derek Jeter's successor as the Yankees shortstop, Gregorius had four hits and walked, setting a major league record for RBIs by a player in a home opener. He also set a Yankees record for RBIs by a shortstop.

METS 2, PHILLIES 0: Matt Harvey allowed one hit over five sharp innings in his encouragin­g season debut, and host New York beat Philadelph­ia. With most seats empty in the 40-degree mist and chill, a healthy-looking Harvey gave the Mets reason to believe he can rebound from two terrible seasons interrupte­d by injury.

BRAVES 13, NATIONALS 6: Freddie Freeman and Preston Tucker each hit a three-run homer, and Atlanta handed visiting Washington its first loss with a victory over Bryce Harper and the Nationals. Leading off the third, Harper continued his hot streak with his fourth homer in the last three games.

BLUE JAYS 14, WHITE SOX 5: Josh Donaldson and Aledmys Diaz each hit a two-run homer, and Toronto routed visiting Chicago for its fourth consecutiv­e victory. Donaldson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs.

RED SOX 4, MARLINS 2: Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run double with two out in the 13th inning, and another night of stingy pitching helped Boston extend its winning streak to five games by beating host Miami.

MARINERS 6, GIANTS 4: Mitch Haniger hit a two-run single, Kyle Seager also singled in a run in Seattle's four-run first inning, and the Mariners spoiled San Francisco's home opener.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 6, DODGERS 1: Daniel Descalso and David Peralta became the first lefthanded teammates to homer off Clayton Kershaw in the same game, lifting host Arizona to a victory over Los Angeles.

BREWERS 5, CARDINALS 4: Christian Yelich and Ryan Braun hit consecutiv­e homers off Dominic Leone with two out in the ninth, sending Milwaukee to a walkoff victory over St. Louis.

ROYALS 1, TIGERS 0: Jake Junis took a shutout into the eighth inning, and Kansas City beat host Detroit for its first victory of the season.

ANGELS 13, INDIANS 2: Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run blast for his first major league homer and finished with three hits as host Los Angeles routed Cleveland.

RANGERS 4, ATHLETICS 1: Cole Hamels struck out 11 over five innings, Joey Gallo homered, and Texas won at Oakland. PADRES 8, ROCKIES 4: Christian Villanueva hit three home runs, and host San Diego rallied past Colorado.
