John C. Cox, 83, entered into eternal rest on April 7, 2018. He was a native Houstonian and dedicated over 30 years to education, retiring at the highest levels as a superinten­dent with the Houston Independen­t School District. John was an astute businessma­n with a passion for real estate and the stock market. John and his beloved wife, Carol, enjoyed traveling the country in their motor home, salt water fishing and enriching the community by investing in property and people. As a highly ranked and accomplish­ed student leader at Phyllis Wheatley High School, John was chosen as one of only three students in Houston to receive the Evan E. Worthing Scholarshi­p. That scholarshi­p enabled him to attend Hampton University and receive a Bachelors degree in Industrial Arts. John also earned a Masters degree in Education from Prairie View A&M University. John was a member of Sloan Memorial United Methodist Church and served as a member of the Usher Board. John was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Carol J. Cox. He is survived by daughter, The Honorable Elaine Jefferson; son-in-law, The Honorable Dwight Jefferson; grandchild­ren, Grant Jefferson and Max Jefferson; brother, Limuel D. Cox, Jr. and, wife, Darlene Cox; niece, Tonia N. Cox; numerous other loving relatives and friends. A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 10am in the Brookside Funeral Home Family Chapel.
