Panarin’s goal in overtime lifts Blue Jackets over Capitals

WASHINGTON — Artemi Panarin scored 6:02 into overtime to give Columbus a 4-3 victory over Washington on Thursday night in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series.

Panarin made an incredible move to drive by fellow Russian Dmitry Orlov and went backhand-to-forehand to beat Philipp Grubauer.

Alexander Wennberg, Thomas Vanek and Seth Jones scored in regulation and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 27 shots for Columbus.

Washington got two powerplay goals from Evgeny Kuznetsov.

LIGHTNING 5, DEVILS 2

Tampa Bay, the top seed in the Eastern Conference, got early goals from four players before holding off New Jersey for the victory at Tampa in Game 1 of the first-round series.

Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Yanni Gourde scored to give Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead that New Jersey trimmed to one goal before Alex Killorn and Nikita Kucherov scored to finish off the win.

PREDATORS 5, AVALANCHE 2

Filip Forsberg scored twice in the third period and Nashville rallied at home to beat Colorado in Game 1 of the Western Conference first-round series.

Pekka Rinne made 25 saves, including a handful on Colorado's Hart Trophy candidate Nathan MacKinnon.

Austin Watson had a goal and an assist for Nashville, which has won 11 straight over Colorado.

BRUINS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 1

Brad Marchand, David Backes and David Krejci scored power-play goals, and Tuukka Rask stopped 26 shots to lead host Boston over Toronto in Game 1 of the first-round series.

David Pastrnak also scored for Boston, and Sean Kuraly bunted one over Frederik Andersen to make it 4-1.

DOUGHTY SUSPENDED

Drew Doughty of the Los Angeles Kings was suspended for one game for an illegal check to the head of Las Vegas forward William Carrier during Wednesday night’s Game 1 of the Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Doughty will miss Game 2 to be played on Friday night in Las Vegas.
