CAROL SUSAN “SUE” LEWIS SMITH

1929-2018

-

Carol Susan Lewis Smith, lovingly known as “Sue”, passed peacefully on April 12, 2018, after a long bout with COPD and Alzheimers. Married to Ralph Smith on December 13, 1952 and for the 65 years that followed, their life together was a beautiful adventure. They lived in Rome, New York where Ralph was stationed and Sue worked as a civilian employee at Griffiss Air Force Base. When Ralph was deployed to Tripoli, Sue followed three months later. It was there that their only son, Wally, was born. When Wally was six months old, Ralph was transferred to Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., so it was back to the states for the Smith family. Their lives together continued in Houston, where they moved in 1955. Sue went to work in 1957 at the Houston Teachers Credit Union, where she quickly moved up the ranks to Vice President, loved by all. Soon she knew she wanted to spend all her time with family, so she left the job to be a fulltime housewife and mother. Because of their great love of golf, Sue and Ralph moved to Quail Valley in Missouri City, Texas in 1976. Sue became an avid golfer and member of the Quail Valley Country Club – the Quails (a women’s social club) and the Women’s Golf Association. Very quickly, she and Ralph became loved and looked up to by the many, many friends they made in Quail Valley. She truly was an amazing woman—an outdoors girl who had a great love of life and having fun. From hunting, fishing and golfing to driving in the Volkswagen “bug” that she loved – Sue lived life to the fullest. She also loved to quilt and needlepoint, so beautifully. Over their many years together, Sue and Ralph traveled the world. For a petite woman who was just 5-feet tall, she was a ball of fire. She is survived by her loving family – husband Ralph, son Wally and daughter-in-law Lisa.
