Boys
Eduardo Salgado, Wisdom
Notable: Salgado scored all of Wisdom’s four goals in the Region III-5A boys soccer tournament — in a 2-0 win over A&M Consolidated and in a 2-1 win over Huntsville.
What coach Fidel Andrade said: “When you have a great group of guys and you build a program to make something great happen like this, it’s a lot of joy, and not for us but our community and our kids, with the things we go through.” Other nominees
Jacob Bell, Crosby: Bell was 4-for-5 with a home run, three doubles, 10 RBIs and three runs in two wins over Baytown Lee.
Michael Bogues, Dawson: Bogues’ discus throw of 149 feet, 3 inches won him gold at the District 23-6A track and field championships.
Layee Kromah, Esik:
The senior’s assist in the Region III-6A semifinal against Tompkins and goal in the regional final against Strake Jesuit helped the Rams make the state soccer tournament.
Girls
Allie Byrd, Kingwood Park
Notable: Byrd’s hat trick against Cedar Park included an overtime goal for a 4-3 win in the Region III-5A girls soccer semifinals. She had a goal and an assist in the regional final against Tomball as Kingwood Park advanced to the state tournament for the first time.
What coach Jess White said: “We’ve been pushing. There have been a lot of quality players who’ve come through, and everybody who’s come through has had a part in building the legacy we want. They did a fantastic job (Saturday), but the standard was set by those who came before.” Other nominees
Ali Russell, Cinco Ranch: Russell scored four goals in the Lady Cougars’ Region III-6A tournament wins over Clear Springs and Tompkins.
Camille Rutherford, George Ranch: Rutherford had a time of 12.77 in the 100-meter dash to win first place at the District 23-6A track and field championships. She also finished first in the 200yard meter dash at 25.14 seconds and was part of silver medal-winning 4x100-meter relay team.
Monique Spruill, Cypress Springs: Spruill ran a time of 5:17.61 seconds to win the 1,600 at the District 17-6A track and field championships.
