Sister Caroline Flynn, CCVI, died at St. Placidus Convent, Houston, Texas on April 20, 2018. Sister Caroline the daughter of Michael and Josephine O’Donoghue Flynn was born in 1931 in Co. Waterford, Ireland. Sister Caroline entered the Congregati­on of the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Houston, Texas on August 11, 1950 at St. Michael Convent, Co. Clare, Ireland. Sister continued with her religious formation and made her First Profession of Vows on June 6, 1953 and her Final Profession of Vows on August 15, 1958 at Villa de Matel in Houston, TX. Being a teacher by profession, she joyfully taught at the following Catholic schools: St. Frances Cabrini, Alexandria, Louisiana; Our Lady of Fatima, Texas City, Texas; St. Francis of Assisi, Houston, Texas; Immaculate Conception, Corsicana, Texas; and James L. Collins, Corsicana, Texas. After many years of teaching in the United States, Sister became the Director of the Ukarimu Retreat Centre in Molo, Kenya, East Africa. Sister also taught at St. Peter the Apostle Nursery School, Molo, Kenya.

Upon returning to the United States, she volunteere­d to teach at the Houston READ Commission Literacy Program, Houston, Texas. Then, towards the end of 2000, she was missioned to serve as the Congregati­on’s Archivist, Houston, Texas. Beginning in January, 2008, she volunteere­d to teach adult literacy at St. Austin Center, Houston, Texas. Sister Caroline lived a simple lifestyle and imbued hospitalit­y, generosity, and kindness.

Sister Caroline is survived by her sister, Alice Tobin of Co. Waterford, Ireland; a nephew, Michael Tobin and a niece, Caroline Tobin both of Co. Waterford, Ireland.

We extend a special thanks to the Sisters and staff for their gentle and loving care during Sister’s later years.

Sister Caroline’s body will be received at the Immaculate Conception Chapel, Villa De Matel, 6510 Lawndale Street, Houston, Texas at: 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 23, 2018, followed by Evening Praise and a celebratio­n of her life. Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the Immaculate Conception Chapel at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 24, 2018. The Rite of Committal will follow at Villa de Matel Cemetery.
