Dump truck strikes, kills cyclist near Rice
Police unsure who’s at fault after third fatal accident in April involving a bicycle
A bicyclist died Tuesday after being struck by a dump truck near Rice University, the third cyclist killed after being hit in the past month.
The woman, whose identity was not released, was killed about 11:55 a.m. in the 6000 block of Main near Sunset, according to the Houston Police Department.
She is believed to have been leaving Rice University after meeting her husband for lunch in the area, Assistant Chief Wendy Baimbridge said.
Both the bicyclist and the man driving the dump truck had a green light at the time of the crash, Baimbridge said. The dump truck was making a right turn off Sunset to go south on Main, while the woman entered the intersection from a sidewalk and was struck by the truck’s right back tire.
It is unclear who may have been at fault, Baimbridge said.
The death marks the third time this month that a bicyclist has been hit and killed by a vehicle in the Houston area.
On April 11, a woman on her bicycle was hit and killed by a Jeep Grand Cherokee on the South Beltway frontage road near Dickinson Road. She was riding in the middle of the inside lane of traffic when she was struck, police said.
On April 12, a 32-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run in the Chinatown area of southwest Houston. He may have been riding his bicycle in the shoulder of the road when a car hit him, police said. Another woman was hit and killed on Oct. 7, 2017, in the 6800 block of the East Sam Houston Parkway, according to the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
