FLORYNE ELAINE WALKER MCCARTY WRIGHT

1919-2018

Floryne Elaine Walker McCarty Wright, age 98, of Buffalo, Texas, passed away, April 26, 2018. She was born to the late Walter and Irene Walker, September 23, 1919, in Houston. Elaine graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School in 1933.

During WWII she began work as a Rosie the Riveter welder for Hughes Tool Company and remained with them after the war for a total of 43 years. She loved to cook and spend time with her large family at her favorite Bayou Vista bay house. Her seafood and chocolate pie were everyone’s favorites. She was known as Grandma and Fatmama by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, all of whom remember crabbing with chicken wings, feeding seagulls, and swinging on the porch swing.

Elaine had a long family history in the Houston Fire department, which included her father Walter Walker who died in the line duty, her son, brother and many other relatives. She was an active member of the Austin’s Old 300, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, First Families of Texas, VFW at Baycliff, and the Over the Hill Gang at Hughes Tool Company who met every week at the Dinner Bell on Longdale and Wayside.

Elaine is survived by her daughter, Irene Burton, of Buffalo, Texas and grandchildren, Patricia Fraser, of Houston; Jo Ann McCarty of Houston; William Burton, of Pasadena; Charles Burton, of Pflugerville; Katheryn Roberts of Houston; and Pauline Lovetro. She is also survived by ten great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by spouses William McCarty and Woodrow Wright; son Robert McCarty and wife Dorothy; son-in-law Bill Burton; Siblings James, George, Sister Mary Celine and Lucille Walker.

A viewing will be held in the Forest Park East Funeral Home of Webster, Texas at 10:30 am, Thursday, May 3rd followed by a service at 12:30. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Houston Fire Department or your local station.
