ADELAIDE SCOTT SMITH

1929-2018

-

Adelaide Scott Smith, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother passed away on Wednesday, the 4th of May 2018. She was born on the 2nd of February 1929, in Houston to Adelaide and Russell Scott. She went to Lamar High School and went on to graduate from Mt. Vernon Jr. College and then the University of Texas. In 1951, she married the man she adored for 67 years, Howard Franklin Smith III. After teaching school for two years, then went on to raise their three daughters.

She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma, the Garden Club of Houston, the Junior League and the Houston Country Club. She also enjoyed her Antique Study Group, her sewing group, and the Women’s Bible Study at River Oaks Baptist.

What gave her the greatest pleasure was simply serving others, whether with a meal, a phone call, a note, or volunteering her time. She especially loved children. One of her greatest joys was teaching them in Sunday school. She poured her life into her children and grandchildren, and had as much fun as they did making mud pies, cooking, planting gardens, or fishing, to name a few. The messier, the better. Her out-going personality and warm smile endeared her to so many.

After being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, she went to Amazing Place each week for several years. It gave her so many creative ways to continue to serve others, be active, and enjoy each day. She loved going there and we are so grateful for all they added to her life.

She is preceded in death by her brother, Dr. Russell Scott and her son-in-law, Robert Madison Snell. She is survived by her husband Howard; daughters, Marion Wade and husband Neal, Elizabeth Snell, and Adelaide Burgher and husband Bedford; grandchildren, Neal Wade and wife Mary, Scott Wade and wife Katie, Charlie Snell, Adelaide Snell, Ford Burgher and wife Emma, Louise Matherne and husband Matt, and Frank Burgher; 13 great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Wease Neuhaus; and nieces Karen Schneider and husband Howard, and Susan Derwae.

We wish to thank the many compassionate caretakers she has had at the Hallmark over the past nine years. They anticipated all her needs and took such good care of her.

Those honored to serve as honorary pallbearers during Saturday’s service are Neal Wade, Ford Burgher, Scott Wade, Frank Burgher, Charlie Snell, and Matt Matherne.

A memorial service and celebration of her life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Saturday, the 12th of May, at River Oaks Baptist Church, 2300 Willowick Road in Houston. Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception to be held in the nearby Fellowship Hall.

Prior to the memorial service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.

In lieu of customary remembrances, memorial contributions may be directed to Amazing Place, 3735 Drexel Drive, Houston, 77027; or to the charity of one’s choice.
