Debates are good

-

In March, the Meyerland Area Democrats called for a debate between Democratic gubernatorial runoff contenders, Lupe Valdez and Andrew White. I happily stated I would contact the campaigns and get it together. I sent 10 or more emails to Valdez’s team, receiving replies of either “no dates for this” or “email us next week” or “we do not like debate formats.” White committed right away once his team reviewed our request and approved the debate format.

We heard the announcement a few days ago of a Friday debate between the two candidates in Austin, sponsored by several Democratic statewide organizations. It was livestreamed on social media. As good as that is, however, I feel strongly that debates should take place in every quadrant of our state, including Harris County.

Why am I and so many others clamoring for debates? It is not to hurt either candidate. It is to strengthen both for the fall election. In addition, the debate format is a proven tactic for sharpening our candidates for the battle ahead. Look at history and the power of debates. Stars are born. Unknowns become household names. Candidates grow stronger as does the ticket.

It is anti-democratic to not have debates in the public eye. In these challenging days for our country we should celebrate and promote debate in both parties. Texas deserves a choice this November. Both Lupe Valdez and Andrew White are not wellknown names statewide. Debates would change that, and Texans would see they have choices.

I call upon Lupe Valdez and Andrew White to commit to such debates in these last few weeks before the May 22 runoff election. I know for sure, Houston is ready and willing to host one. Art Pronin, president, Meyerland Area Democrats
