Dynamo give up last-minute goal to end up with tie

VANCOUVER, Britsh Columbia — Mauro Manotas scored in the 90th minute, but the Dynamo couldn’t hold the lead Friday night as they settled for a 2-2 tie with the Vancouver Whitecaps after allowing a goal in the fourth minute of extra time.

Manotas’ fifth goal of the season appeared to give the Dynamo a hardearned victory, but Kendall Watson scored the equalizer in the final seconds to the delight of the 18,813 in attendance at BC Place.

Tomas Martinez opened the scoring for the Dynamo (3-3-3) in the 35th minute. The lead was short-lived as the Whitecaps (4-5-2) tied it in the 44th minute on a goal by Jose Aja.

COLLEGE BASEBALL UH clinches share of title

The Houston Cougars took two big steps toward an American Athletic Conference regular-season baseball title on Friday by sweeping a doublehead­er against No. 25 Connecticu­t at Hartford, Conn.

UH won the opener 6-5 as Lael Lockhart Jr. went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. In the seventh, Lockhart hit a two-run homer to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. After UConn tied the game at 4, Lockhart had a two-run double in the eighth. Joe

Davis hit two home runs and drove in four runs as UH won the second game 10-1.

The victories give UH (31-15, 16-7 in AAC) a share of the conference title. The Cougars conclude conference play with a single game against UConn (29-16, 11-9) on Sunday, then play non-conference games the final week of the season.

TENNIS Nadal suffers rare loss on clay

Rafael Nadal has found a worthy rival on clay.

Dominic Thiem beat the top-ranked Nadal 7-5, 6-3 in the Madrid Open quarterfin­als, breaking the defending champion's run of 21 straight wins on clay courts.

Nadal hadn't lost a single set on clay since falling to Thiem a year ago in the Italian Open quarterfin­als.

Nadal will lose his world No. 1 ranking to

Roger Federer because of the defeat. Thiem will face sixthseede­d Kevin Anderson in the semifinals after he hit 15 aces to down Dusan Lajovic 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3. Second-seeded Alexander Zverev will face Denis Shapovalov in the

other semifinal.

On the women's side, two-time former Madrid champion Petra Kvitova beat Karolina Pliskova 7-6 (4), 6-3, in an allCzech semifinal.

Kvitova will meet Kiki Bertens in the final after she beat seventh-seeded Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-2.

MOTOR SPORTS Harvick wins pole at Kansas

Kevin Harvick had to race onto the track after finally passing through inspection just as the first round of qualifying was beginning for Saturday night's race at Kansas Speedway.

By the time things were settled, Harvick had raced his way to the pole.

Fresh off his fourth win of the season last week at Dover, Harvick turned a best lap of 188.811 mph to easily claim the top starting spot at Kansas City, Kan. Ryan Blaney was a distant second in 187.825 mph.

There were 10 cars still trying to clear inspection when the first qualifying session started, and several never made it on the track by the end. That included Matt Kenseth, who is making his return this week in the No. 6 Ford for Roush Fenway Racing. In other news:

• Will Power has won his third IndyCar Grand Prix pole by turning a fast lap of 1 minute, 9.8182 seconds on his final qualifying run at Indianapol­is.

The Australian claimed his 51st pole win, giving him sole possession of third place in series history, on Indy's 2.439-mile, 14-turn road course.

MISCELLANE­OUS Skeeters win behind Marshall

Courtney Hawkins had three hits and drove in two runs and Brett Marshall allowed only one run in seven innings as the Sugar Land Skeeters won 5-3 at Long Island. … Captain Patrick Kane scored two goals and added three assists as the United States demolished South Korea 13-1 at Herning, Denmark for a fifth straight victory in hockey’s world championsh­ips. … Brazil right back Dani Alves will miss the World Cup with a knee injury suffered for Paris Saint-German, leaving the five-time champions without one of their main leaders.
