- Adam Coleman

Boys

Demond Demas, North Forest

Notable: The sophomore won the Class 4A long jump at 23 feet, 8½ inches, capping an undefeated season in the event for Demas, who is one of the top-ranked wide receivers in the class of 2020. He also plays basketball.

What Demas said: “It feels awesome. It’s one of those feelings that you cannot explain.” Other nominees

Kenneth Bodwin, Stafford: He won the Class 4A high jump (6-6). He also won the 300-meter hurdles at 37.12 seconds in helping lead the Spartans to a second-place finish.

Josiah Castro, La Porte: He helped the Bulldogs win the decisive game in their Class 6A Region III area-round series against Dickinson, allowing one run on six hits.

Otito Ogbonnia, Katy Taylor: The UCLA football signee won the Class 6A discus (187-11) and the shot put (66-1) at the state track and field meet.

Girls

Ally Henson, Yates

Notable: She won the Class 4A 100-meter hurdles in 14.0 seconds at the state track and field meet. Her time eclipsed the 4A state record but will not be counted as a record because the wind exceeded the allowable speed. Henson also finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles (45.69).

What Henson said: “I had to basically start over again because, at times, I guess I was scared after I fell. My times are dropping. They’re not going up. I’m just trying to get back to 13, and I’m 14.0 so I’m almost there.” Other nominees

Claire Bryant, Memorial: She won the Class 6A long jump (20 feet, 4¾ inches) at the state meet and was third in the high jump (5-8).

Nya Harmon, The Woodlands: She won the Class 6A discus throw (150-3) and was second in the shot put (43-1) at the state meet.

Chassety Raines, Klein Collins: Her grand slam in Game 1 of the Tigers’ regional quarterfinal series against Spring led the way in a 14-4 victory. She added two more hits and a stolen base in the Game 2 win.
