The Dynamo hope hitting the road doesn’t hinder their forward progress.

The Dynamo attempt to continue their trek up the Western Conference standings Wednesday when they open a two-game trip with a match against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium.

The Dynamo (5-3-3) have won or drawn in their last four matches, primarily off the strength of a dynamic attack. Forwards Alberth Elis (tied for second in MLS with seven goals) and Mauro Manotas (five goals) headlined that offense through the first two months of the season. But in recent games the scoring bug has spread throughout the attacking half.

Honduran Romell Quioto has been one of the team’s highestrated performers, recording three goals and tying an MLS high with five assists (Elis has four). Midfielder Tomás Martínez has added four goals and assists combined over the last five games while Boniek García owns an assist in each of the last three contests. The Dynamo are tied for the league lead with 26 goals scored.

While last week’s win over New York City FC was a nice break in a seasonlong habit of surrendering early leads, Dynamo coach Wilmer Cabrera wants to see his backline make more strides.

“We’re going to face a team who just won away in a tough environment, and they’re going to be motivated and we are close to each other in the standings,” he said. “We’re doing well attacking, but we have to continue keeping that level. We have to improve defensively … because we’ve been receding goals and that’s not good enough.”

The Dynamo, fifth in the conference with 18 points, own a two-point edge over Real Salt Lake (5-6-1)..

“They’re very good with the ball, they’re young and they’re hungry,” Cabrera said. “They have a lot of mobility … and right now they’re getting their rhythm.”

Their opponents also feature a pair of U.S. national team talents.

Midfielder Kyle Beckerman is the league’s all-time leader in games played and started. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando is the winningest keeper in MLS history. Midfielders Albert Rusnák, Joao Plata and Damir Kreilach have a combined eight goals and seven assists.

But Dynamo players also feel in rhythm riding a two-game winning streak.

“We’re getting results, that’s the most important thing,” midfielder Luis Gil said. “It’s going to be tough obviously (with) the altitude. It’s always been a tough place playing in Salt Lake. I feel like we just have to keep doing what we’re doing.

“At the same time, we have to work hard defensively, maybe get us a shutout in one of these games. We have a tough road schedule ahead of us so we’re going to give it our all.”
