Man faces charge in 2017 slaying
3 others sought in connection with shooting outside home
A man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death last year of a man during an alleged robbery attempt, authorities said.
Police also are seeking information on three others in connection to the slaying.
Clarence James Humphrey, 35, was shot and killed on July 23, 2017, in front of a home where he was staying in League City’s Mar Bella subdivision, police said in a news release earlier this week.
Humphrey was returning to the home after a trip to a doughnut shop at about 5:30 a.m. when the suspects attempted to rob him, according to a Galveston County Crime Stoppers news release last year.
Surveillance video appeared to show the suspects lying in wait for Humphrey before attacking him and shooting him multiple times, then fleeing the scene, that news release said.
Investigators submitted several pieces of evidence to the Texas Department of Public Safety crime lab. League City police said DNA evidence placed John Wells, 30, of Houston, at the scene.
Wells was served with a first-degree murder warrant on May 22 at the Harris County Jail, where he was being held on unrelated charges.
League City police continue to investigate his case in an attempt to identify and locate the other assailants.
The Galveston County District Attorney’s Office set Wells’ bail at $300,000.
Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact League City detective Austin Frakes at 281-554-1865.
