Extension locks up Luhnow through 2023

GM gets additional job title: President of Baseball Ops

The architect of a renaissance is staying put.

Jeff Luhnow, who seven years ago arrived in Houston with a plan, toiled through two 100-loss seasons and is now the bricklayer of the Astros’ first World Series championship, received a promotion and five-year contract extension on Monday.

“I gave him the confidence and hopefully the tools to really build out what he wanted to do, and you’re starting to see the results of that not only last year, but I think you’ll continue to see the results,” said owner Jim Crane, who announced the deal in a news conference prior to Monday night’s game against the Rays.

“When you have a good chemistry within the team — not only on the baseball side but the business side — that goes a long way to winning. We want to continue to reward the folks that have gotten us there and signed a long-term deal with him.”

Luhnow’s new deal will keep him in Houston through 2023 with an added title of president of baseball operations. The new title carried with it a “small raise,” Crane said, though no concrete financial terms of the new deal were disclosed.

That an end date for the contract was revealed is revolutionary — but pointed — for a front office Luhnow acknowledged is “very closely guarded” and not privy to freely sharing such details.

“This is not my second deal. (Crane has) ripped up and given me new deals
