HISD veteran Walker named as new AD

-

The Houston Independent School District has chosen Andre Walker as its new director of athletics, according to an email sent to the athletic staff by interim superintendent Grenita F. Lathan on Thursday. Walker replaces Marmion Dambrino,

who announced her retirement last month.

Walker, who has been with the district for 18 years, has served as teacher, coach, assistant principal and most recently as an administrator with the athletic department.

Dambrino said Walker is the right choice for the job.

“He has the skill set to do the job,” she said. “Coaches and HISD administrators respect him and appreciate his passion for athletics and for the student-athletes.”

Walker grew up in Houston and attended Kashmere High School before going on to Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M, where he received his master’s degree.

Walker said HISD has always been a part of his life from when his brothers and sisters went to school to when he started elementary school in the district.

“All 45 years of my life, I have been around this district, and I care deeply about it,” he said. “I am truly honored to take on this role.

“I was trained by the best with Marmion (Dambrino). I can’t replace her, but I can rely on the lessons, the stories and the conversations I have had with her as I tread my own path.”
