Pirates complete five-game sweep

PITTSBURGH — Josh Bell hit a game-ending, tworun double in the 10th inning to send the Pirates to 7-6 victory over the Brewers on Sunday, giving Pittsburgh the first five-game sweep in the majors in nearly a dozen years.

The Pirates’ five-game sweep is the first in the majors since Aug. 18-21, 2006, when the Yankees took five straight from Boston. It’s the first five-game sweep for Pittsburgh since 1996.

ORIOLES 6, RANGERS 5: Manny Machado homered before making an early exit on a wet day, and host Baltimore rallied past Texas. Machado was removed in the fifth inning after a 26-minute rain delay, presumably to prevent the All-Star shortstop from playing on a sloppy field. The last-place Orioles are entertaini­ng offers for Machado, who is expected to be dealt before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.

CARDINALS 6, REDS 4: Matt Carpenter and Dexter Fowler homered for host St. Louis, making interim manager Mike Shildt a winner in his first game. Shildt took over for Mike Matheny, who was fired late Saturday after six-plus seasons at the helm.

RED SOX 5, BLUE JAYS 2: Xander Bogaerts homered in his first at-bat a day after hitting a game-ending grand slam, and host Boston beat Toronto to enter the AllStar break at 68-30, its best record since 1949.

INDIANS 5, YANKEES 2: Michael Brantley homered leading off the eighth inning as Cleveland beat visiting New York for a split of their four-game series.

CUBS 7, PADRES 4: Jon Lester won for the eighth time in nine starts, Jason Heyward drove in two runs, and Chicago completed a three-game sweep at San Diego.

DODGERS 5, ANGELS 3: Yasmani Grandal and Enrique Hernandez homered, leading the host Dodgers past the Angels for a split in the Freeway Series.

ROCKIES 4, MARINERS 3: All-Star Trevor Story led off the ninth inning with his 20th homer, closing out Colorado’s three-game series sweep of visiting Seattle.

ATHLETICS 6, GIANTS 2: Stephen Piscotty homered for the fifth time in nine games, leading Oakland to a victory at San Francisco. The A’s have won nine of 12.

NATIONALS 6, METS 1: Daniel Murphy and Trea Turner each hit a two-run single in Washington’s five-run seventh inning as the Nationals won at New York.

WHITE SOX 10, ROYALS 1: Daniel Palka and Yoan Moncada homered, Lucas Giolito tossed two-hit ball into the seventh inning, and host Chicago beat Kansas City.

BRAVES 5, DIAMONDBAC­KS 1: Julio Teheran pitched 6 1 ⁄3 scoreless innings, and host Atlanta beat Arizona.

MARLINS 10, PHILLIES 5: Brian Anderson hit a threerun homer as Miami defeated visiting Philadelph­ia.

TWINS 11, RAYS 7: Brian Dozier hit a walkoff grand slam in the 10th inning as Minnesota beat Tampa Bay.
