Vogue’s September issue will make history, thanks to Beyoncé.
The cover image is said to be the first shot by a black photographer in the magazine’s 126year history. For the cover shoot, Beyoncé tapped Tyler Mitchell, a 23-year-old Atlanta artist who told the New York Times that he depicts “black people and people of color in a really real and pure way.”
The issue will hit newstands later this month.
Vogue’s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour gave Beyoncé full editorial control of her cover and feature. Fashion industry insiders speculate this could be Wintour’s final September issue; she may be stepping down after three decades at the helm.
Beyoncé also has teamed up with Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing for a fashion collaboration. The three-piece collection, which was launched at Balmain’s Paris flagship store last month, includes a T-shirt, $290, and sweatshirts/ hoodies, $550-$1,790. The items went on sale at balmain.com and beyonce.com a day after the launch. Proceeds from the collection will be donated to the United Negro College Fund.
Earlier this spring, the Houston native gave $100,000 to four historically black colleges and universities after her performance at the Coachella Valley Music Music and Arts Festival.
Also making history is British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful. His first September issue features Rihanna on the cover. She’s the first black woman to be on the magazine’s cover in its 102-year history.
