Kubiak, Welker in Legends class

Former Texans coach Gary Kubiak and Texans assistant coach Wes Welker headline the 2018 Class of Gridiron Legends. Kubiak and Welker are joined by cornerback Raymond Clayborn, running back Alois Blackwell, running back Norm Bulaich and high school coach Barton

Massey in the six-member class voted on by the the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl Committee.

The Class of 2018 will be introduced at the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff Game between Texas Tech and Mississipp­i at NRG Stadium on Sept. 1 and inducted into the Gridiron Legends before the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl at NRG Stadium on Dec. 27.

In other news:

• Thirteen University of North Carolina players face early season suspension­s for selling teamissued shoes. The school said nine players received four-game suspension­s for the secondary NCAA violations. Two players will sit two games, and two others will be sidelined for one contest. The NCAA approved a school request to delay two suspension­s affecting multiple players at one position, while the other 11 suspension­s start with the Sept. 1 opener at California.

O’Neal, the son of retired NBA great Shaquille

O’Neal, signed a grant-inaid to attend UCLA this fall. The 6-10, 220-pounder from Los Angeles played the last two seasons at Crossroads High in nearby Santa Monica. Shaquille O’Neal starred at LSU before going on to the NBA.
