Red-light cameras

-

Regarding “Sugar Land should nix red-light camera” (Page A9, July 31), the writer complained about a ticket he received for running a red-light in Sugar Land. Unlike Houston, Sugar Land is fortunate to have red-light cameras.

The writer opined that the cameras were just a way to enrich the Sugar Land police. I would assume that if the police were at every intersection and wrote the tickets, the proceeds of the fines would also end up in the city bank account for law enforcement, but the overhead to pay the police would be enormous.

Red-light cameras are a cost-effective way to save lives, fine the offenders and support our police. Let’s have another vote in Houston for the red-light cameras.
