28. ROKY ERICKSON
What a story. Erickson hit psych-rock pay dirt right away with the 13th Floor Elevators and “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” then took a hard right into the institutionalized hell of Rusk State Hospital. Decades of declining mental health and harrowing music followed — full of aliens, vampires and fire demons, his ’70s and ’80s catalog reads like “Tales From the Crypt.” But he’s no myth; Roky is still an everyday musician with an Aug. 18 gig at the Continental Club. Most Texas musical moment: The primal scream halfway through “You’re Gonna Miss Me,” freaking squares out since 1966.
