29. BEULAH “SIPPIE” WALLACE

- Andrew Dansby

Born Beulah Thomas, Wallace grew up singing in Houston churches along with her brother Hersal Thomas, a pianist and composer of immense influence who would go on to become a key player in the Chicago blues scene of the 1920s. Wallace waxed a few dozen brilliant blues sides in the ’20s and then walked away from music until her discovery during the ’60s folk revival, when she received some long-overdue attention. Among her boosters was Bonnie Raitt, who covered several Wallace tunes. Most Texas musical moment: Despite making her name in Chicago, Wallace was known as the Texas Nightingale.
