The Crisp native whose tonsillectomy changed country music, Tubb came away from the procedure unable to ape his hero, Jimmie Rodgers, and instead set about warbling earnestly over an electric, boot-
shuffling brand of honky-tonk. Tubb’s music sounds a little mannered decades later, but it was remarkable in its day, swing exchanged for shuffle that surrounded a voice as comfortable and worn as a set of old boots.
