43. JERRY JEFF WALKER

- Cary Darling

Though not from Texas — he was born in upstate New York as Ronald Clyde Crosby — Walker became indelibly associated with the Austin scene in the ’70s after moving there. Falling in with the likes of Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings and Michael Martin Murphey, he soon was at the forefront of the burgeoning outlaw country movement. Often known as “The Jimmy Buffett of Texas” for his folky song-stories of everyday life, Walker wrote at least one track that is an American classic, “Mr. Bojangles.”
