Hot spots may not help in convention halls

- Helpline@chron.com

Q: I was wondering why 4G on my cellphone will not work in convention halls. I tried to solve this problem by getting my own portable Wi-Fi hot spot, but it turns out that didn’t work either. How does all this work, and is there a solution to this problem?

A:

There are two problems with getting good connectivity inside a convention hall. The first is that these spaces tend to be very large, making the interior quite far from the nearest cell tower. On top of that, these buildings tend to be well insulated, which makes them prone to blocking or weakening the cellular signal.

The second problem is that they tend to be full of other mobile devices, at least during a convention going on. The concentration of so many devices in a limited space puts a strain on the service.

The reason buying a mobile hot spot didn’t help is because the hot spot depends on the same signal your phone requires, so it is susceptible to the same limitations.

Your problem is not uncommon. I struggle to get good connectivity in the grocery store, and I pretty much had to give up when attending Comicpalooza this year.

Your best option is to check to see if the convention hall offers its own Wi-Fi service.

Q: Recently, my computer has started giving me a message when it starts up. The message says there was a problem starting C:\Users\ Me\CNMSSC~1.DLL. The specified module could not be found. I am not sure what this module is and why I’m getting this message. Is it something I need to get repaired?

A:

This type of cryptic error message can be confusing, but the secret to understanding it is to focus on the file referenced in the error.

In this case we want to look at CNMSSC~1.DLL which is being reported as being located in your user profile folder.

If you take that file name and the error message and plug it into your favorite search engine you will find websites that should tell you what the file is and also tips on solving the error.

In this case, a search using the file name of CNMSSC~1.DLL combined with the text “The specified module could not be found” will show you several sites that indicate the error is related to your Canon printer software.

What is likely happening is that the software has become corrupted and when the module loads at boot, it fails and throws you this error.

I would start by reinstalling any applications related to your Canon printer to see if that clears the problem.
