3 teenagers are held without bail in deadly shooting at apartment
Three teens charged with capital murder admitted to police being in the parking lot where a 15year-old was shot Wednesday night, though they differ on who might have done the shooting, according to prosecutors.
Eighteen year-old Jashon Romero Freeman, 19-year-old Jacorey Jervar Randolph and 18-year-old Albert Ray Edmond all remain in the Harris County Jail without bail. The three are set for a first appearance in Harris County Court on Monday, following a brief court hearing Friday. All three requested a public defender.
The trio are accused of shooting Bryan Portales, 15, in the parking lot of the Innsbruck-Lemoyne Apartments at 4603 Sherwood Lane in northwest Houston, near the 610 Loop and U.S. 290. According to information presented at Friday’s probable cause hearing, witnesses said three men in a black BMW came to the parking lot, an altercation occurred and when Portales turned he was shot several times by one of the men, who matches Edmond’s physical description.
The man then took something from the victim’s pocket, returned to the vehicle, and left with the other two suspects, witnesses said.
Spring Branch Police arrested the three men Wednesday night, hours after the shooting. Prosecutors said police impounded the black BMW the men were in, finding 6 grams of marijuana, 20 Xanax pills, spent shell casings and bloody clothing. Police also found five cellphones, one of which matched the description of Portales’ missing one.
Prosecutors said eventually all three of the men acknowledged being in the parking lot of the complex, with the intent to buy drugs. Randolph and Edmond both told police they stayed in the car and only heard the gunshots. Freeman, according to prosecutors, said he was talking to a man who kept his hand in his pocket, turned, and then heard but did not see the shooting.
Edmond also was arraigned Friday on a felony warrant related to a July 31 incident at a Houston apartment where he is accused of striking a female acquaintance at her home.
As he left with another suspect in the assault, witnesses said he pointed what appeared to be an assault rifle from the sunroof and yelled “do something” at the brothers of the alleged victim.
