CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Manager Rick Renteria returned to the dugout after missing four games following the lightheadedness he experienced on Monday in Minnesota.
Doctors cleared him to return for Friday night’s game at Detroit, and he was in the dugout while the club was batting in the top of the first inning.
MILWAUKEE BREWERS
The club demoted ex-closer and 2017 All-Star Corey Knebel to Class AAA Colorado Springs to work on his mechanics.
It’s been a dramatic fall this season for Knebel, who was the team’s closer until late July.
The righthander has a 7.24 ERA since the All-Star break that has raised his season ERA to 5.08. In his last seven appearances, Knebel is 0-2 with an 11.37 ERA.
NEW YORK METS
Jay Bruce was reinstated from the disabled list after missing more than two months with an aching right hip, and the team plans to audition the veteran outfielder at first base down the stretch.
Bruce started in right field, his regular position, Friday night against Washington in his first big league game since June 17. But the fourth-place club intends to play him at first base fairly often as it attempts to determine the best fit for next year.
SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS
LHP Derek Holland apologized after a television interview during which he used a mock Asian accent. Holland expressed remorse while talking to reporters on Thursday in the visiting clubhouse at Citi Field.
“I want to be held accountable for everything that I’ve done and caused with all of this. It’s embarrassing what I did,” Holland said. “I was just trying to have some fun.”
Holland made the racially insensitive joke during an appearance on Wednesday on MLB Network’s “Intentional Talk.” He appeared alongside team massage therapist Haro Ogawa, whom he introduced as his “hype man” and whom he addressed at various points during the interview. Holland told reporters he apologized to Ogawa.
TEXAS RANGERS
RHP Bartolo Colon was put on the 10-day DL because of a strained lower back.
Manager Jeff Banister said the injury isn't believed to be serious, and Colon will go back in the rotation when he comes off the DL.
The 45-year-old is 7-11 with a 5.45 ERA.
