JOHN WINN McKEE, 94, died on August 23, 2018, in Houston, Texas.

John was born on August 29, 1923, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, to Jordan Rufus and Esther Gaunt McKee. John was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert A. “Bob” McKee, and his sister, Kathleen McKee Doremus. He is survived by his niece, Ann Doremus, and his nephew, Ted Doremus. As a young child, John moved to College Station, Texas, during the time when his father worked as a professor at Texas A&M University. John later moved back to Lake Charles, where he graduated from Lake Charles High School in 1940. John then matriculat­ed at Rice Institute in the fall of 1940. His time at Rice was interrupte­d by service in the US Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a Disbursing Officer. After returning from military service, John finished his studies at Rice, graduating with a degree in Economics in 1947. John then attended law school at Tulane University in New Orleans for six months before transferri­ng to SMU Law School, where he received a JD in 1951. He then re-entered the military as a Lieutenant Colonel and served from 1951 to 1953 as an Aviation Supply Officer in the US Navy during the Korean War. After his release from active duty in January, 1953, John went to work as a tax manager for Union Texas Petroleum (which later became Honeywell), where he worked for the next 35 years as a tax manager until his retirement. John was a lifelong, ardent supporter of all things related to Rice University, especially athletics. John was a long-time, very faithful member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and a member of the Roundtable Class until his death. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on August 30, 2018 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 S. Main, Houston, Texas 77004. Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, the Rice University Owl Club or a charity of your choice. The family wishes to thank his personal care giver, Mattie Guillory, and the staff at Holly Hall for their kind, loving service to John the last few years of his life.
