No. 21 UCF routs UConn in opener

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. — McKenzie Milton threw for 346 yards and five touchdowns, and No. 21 Central Florida routed Connecticu­t 56-17 on Thursday night to extend the longest winning streak in the nation to 14 games.

The reigning American Athletic Conference offensive player of the year completed 24 of 32 passes and ran for another 50 yards. Sophomore receiver Tre Nixon, a transfer from Mississipp­i, caught five passes for 101 yards and scored on plays of 34 and 11 yards.

It was the first game for coach Josh Heupel, who took the reins after Scott Frost left for Nebraska. UConn quarterbac­k David Pindell was a bright spot for the Huskies, throwing for 266 yards and a touchdown.

Cornelius’ 5 TDs lift Oklahoma St. to win

Taylor Cornelius passed for 295 yards and five touchdowns in his first career start to help Oklahoma State defeat Missouri State 58-17 in Stillwater, Okla.

Cornelius had been Mason Rudolph's backup for most of his career, but Rudolph now is with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cornelius, a fifth-year senior, seized his opportunit­y by completing 24 of 34 passes and rushing for 27 yards in the season opener for both teams.

Baylor dismisses D-lineman Johnson

Baylor defensive tackle Micheal Johnson has been kicked off the team for an unspecifie­d violation of team rules.

The school made the announceme­nt Thursday night, two days before the opener at home against Abilene Christian.

Johnson, a Hightower product, played 15 games (one start) over two seasons, recording nine tackles and one tackle for loss.
