The Texans capitalized on their last-place finish from a year ago.
Ranking fourth on the waiver wire claiming priority list after going 4-12 last season, the Texans shuffled their roster Sunday one day after getting down to the NFL roster limit of 53 players.
They were awarded three players off waivers: former Miami Dolphins running back Greg “Buddy” Howell, former New Orleans Saints cornerback Natrell Jamerson and former New England Patriots safety A.J. Moore. All were undrafted rookies.
Meanwhile, the Texans resigned quarterback Joe Webb, according to his agent, David Canter. The dual-threat quarterback was released Saturday during the initial roster cutdown to 53 players. Webb had a strong preseason and impressed the coaching staff with his versatility and mobility. He doubles as a special-teams contributor. Webb, 31, is 6-4, 230 pounds and has previous stints with Buffalo, Carolina and Minnesota. He has passed for 888 career yards and three touchdowns, rushing for 326 yards and four scores with 401 return yards.
The Texans also cut safety Kurtis Drummond, running back Troymaine Pope and tight end MyCole Pruitt.
Howell, 6-1, 225 pounds, ran for 2,424 yards and 22 touchdowns at Florida Atlantic. He rushed for 76 yards and one touchdown, averaging 5.4 yards per carry this preseason for the Dolphins.
Moore, 5-11, 200 pounds, excels on special teams. He had 48 tackles, one sack, a fumble recovery and three pass deflections as a senior at Mississippi.
Jamerson, 6-0, 198 pounds, played at Wisconsin. He worked out privately for Texans secondary coach Anthony Midget prior to the NFL draft.
Clearing waivers after being waived-injured, tight end Jevoni Robinson is now on the Texans’ injured reserve list.
Cut by the Texans on Saturday, former third-round wide receiver Braxton Miller went unclaimed off waivers.
The following players cut by the Texans were claimed by other team: safety Corey Moore (Colts), cornerback Dee Virgin (Lions) and safety Ibraheim Campbell (Cowboys).
The Texans signed eight players to the practice squad, which has a 10-player limit. That included signing outside linebacker Davin Bellamy, cornerback Andre Chachere, center-guard Kyle Fuller, a former seventh-round draft pick from Baylor, offensive tackle Roderick Johnson, nose tackle Darius Kilgo, tight end Matt Lengel, offensive lineman Chad Slade and wide receiver Jester Weah.
All of those players were released by the Texans on Saturday and cleared waivers.
