Rockies’ Story hits 3 home runs

-

DENVER — Colorado’s Trevor Story homered in his first three at-bats, including one projected at more than 500 feet, as the Rockies defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-3 on Wednesday night.

Story's first home run, a 459-foot shot to left, gave the Rockies a 2-1 lead in the first inning. His solo homer in the fourth traveled an estimated 505 feet and is the longest homer in franchise history and the longest since Statcast began tracking distances in 2015.

ANGELS 9, RANGERS 3: Shohei Ohtani homered twice on a huge night at the plate after getting bad news about his pitching arm, and Los Angeles won at Texas.

Perhaps headed for Tommy John surgery, the twoway rookie sensation went 4-for-4 with three RBIs, four runs and a stolen base to power the Angels. Ohtani has new damage in his right elbow and ligamentreplacement surgery has been recommended.

RED SOX 9, BRAVES 8: Brandon Phillips hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning, highlighting his long-awaited season debut and capping the biggest comeback by Boston this year for a win at Atlanta.

Boston scored six times in the eighth to make it 7-all. After Freddie Freeman hit a solo homer with two outs in the Braves eighth, the Red Sox rallied again.

Phillips, 37, signed a minor league deal with Boston in June and promoted from Class AAA Tuesday.

ATHLETICS 8, YANKEES 2: Mike Fiers allowed two runs in six-plus innings and was backed by a four-run first as Oakland won at home to remain 3½ games behind the Astros in the AL West.

INDIANS 3, ROYALS 1: Corey Kluber became the first 18-game winner in the majors this season, striking out 10 and pitching host Cleveland past Kansas City.

CUBS 6, BREWERS 4: Jose Quintana pitched 62⁄3 strong innings, Daniel Murphy homered and had three hits as Chicago won at Milwaukee to open up a fourgame lead in the National League Center.

CARDINALS 7, NATIONALS 6: Matt Adams homered twice against the team which traded him last month, Marcell Ozuna had four hits, and St. Louis won at Washington. Carlos Martinez worked the final two innings for his first save since 2014.

METS 7, DODGERS 4: Zack Wheeler stayed in the game after getting hit in the chest by a line drive, pitching seven sharp innings to lead New York to a road win.

MARLINS 2, PHILLIES 1: Righthander Sandy Alcantara pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning in his second career start, and Miami beat visiting Philadelphia.

PIRATES 3, REDS 2: Jameson Taillon pitched five effective innings as host Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati.

TIGERS 10, WHITE SOX 2: Ronny Rodriguez had a two-run homer, helping Detroit win at Chicago.

BLUE JAYS 10, RAYS 3: Aledmys Diaz hit a three-run homer in a seven-run first inning as Toronto downed visiting Tampa Bay.
