Kaepernick’s Nike ad resonates with rookie safety

- Aaron Wilson

The new Nike advertisement featuring Colin Kaepernick resonates heavily with Texans rookie safety Justin Reid.

Reid’s older brother, former 49ers Pro Bowl safety Eric Reid, was Kaepernick’s teammate when the quarterback knelt during the national anthem as a silent protest against social injustice, especially the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement.

“I know him well, I have a good relationship with him,” Justin Reid said of Kaepernick. “He and Eric talk very frequently. I support Colin. That’s huge. I’m proud to be an ambassador for Nike, especially after the new ad campaign.

“When I first saw that ad, it made me happy to see it because it was unexpected. To be able to see his face, because I know Colin personally, to be able to see him continue to be that symbol of change we’re trying to bring to the country, it was very cool to see.”

Reid took some flak after he wrote on Twitter, “Mad respect” about the Nike ad.

“Everyone is entitled to their own opinion,” Reid said. “It doesn’t bother me.”

Kaepernick has not played in the NFL since the 2016 season and has filed a grievance against the NFL that claims owners conspired to keep him out of the league because of his protests. Texans owner Bob McNair was among those who gave a deposition in the case. A judge recently ruled that the case can proceed to trial.

A similar arbitration case is pending involving Reid’s brother, who became a free agent after 2017 and is unsigned. He originally knelt with Kaepernick in 2016 and continued to protest last season.

“One of the biggest issues that we’re having right now is the narrative of the story is getting hijacked,” Reid said. “It’s not about the anthem, it’s not about the military. I have family that were deployed in the military, so I have all the respect in the world for everyone who puts on a uniform. The point of the topic is police brutality and that type of thing.” Moore transitions here from Patriots

Rookie safety A.J. Moore is one of the most knowledgeable Texans when it comes to the Patriots. Moore was with the Patriots for the preseason and offseason after signing with them in the spring as an undrafted free agent.

Now, the 5-11, 200-pound former Mississippi player is learning on the fly after joining the Texans on Sunday off waivers from the Patriots.

“I felt very thankful for the opportunity the Patriots gave me,”Moore said. “I gave it my best shot up there. … I’m coming here to do whatever they ask me do to and be a great teammate.” Fuller projected to start Sunday

Wide receiver Will Fuller returned to practice for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury during training camp.

Although he was limited, Fuller is preparing to start Sunday against the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium. Clowney ready for full workload Pro Bowl outside linebacker

Jadeveon Clowney had a limited workload during the preseason.

He played in just one preseason game and looked fully recovered from offseason arthroscopic knee surgery.

Now, coach Bill O’Brien has indicated that Clowney is ready to play an entire game Sunday in the opener. Concussion nearly behind Johnson Starting cornerback Kevin
