Ups and downs

Tofu, silicon, dyed hair and cannabis oil.

-

If Houston’s rainy days have you hankering for a big bowl of hot miso soup at your local Japanese spot this weekend, beware — Ted Cruz might accuse you of not being Texan enough. The state’s junior senator went on a bizarre rant this week and alleged that his political opponents wanted the Lone Star State to be a place of “tofu and silicon and dyed hair.” So, the next time you see an Austin tech-bro and a Dallas socialite exploring Houston’s foodie scene, let them know that Cruz is on to them.

Speaking of un-Texan, it turns out that Attorney General Ken Paxton is prohibited from buying firearms. Why? Because he’s under indictment for securities fraud. Consider this advice for aspiring GOP politicos: If you can’t own a gun, please don’t run.

If he’s found guilty, Paxton might have a familiar face as a bunkmate behind bars. State Rep. Ron Reynolds turned himself in to serve a year in jail for the misdemeanor crime of barratry, also known as ambulance chasing. However, that doesn’t mean the Fort Bend Democrat loses his seat — only felony charges would force him out of office. For those wondering: No, state reps can’t vote on bills from jail. Ron, do your constituents a favor and resign.

Speaking of jails, U.S. Rep. Pete Olson might want to check out Guantanamo Bay. The Fort Bend Republican told a black -ops worthy whopper this week when he “accidentally” blamed the 9/11 terrorist attack on Pakistan. In reality, most of the 19 alQaida hijackers on September 11 attacks were from Saudi Arabia. Hey, at least he didn’t blame it on Iraq. That sure would look silly.

Need to mellow after all that political news? Head to Bissonnet and Texas 6, where Houston is getting our first cannabis oil (CBD) store. No, it won’t get you high like the stuff Willie Nelson smokes. Supposedly, CBD helps treat all sorts of ailments, from epilepsy to anxiety. Still, don’t be surprised if the nearby bodega has a run on Funyuns.

Or for those who prefer the finer things in life, Tilman Fertita’s Post Oak Hotel at Uptown was granted AAA's only five-diamond rating in Houston. The billion-dollar buyer now boasts one of only three Texas hotels to achieve such a high standard of luxury. Not to mention high prices. We’ll keep our thumbs on the penny slots at The Golden Nugget.
