A streaky kind of night
It’s always a noteworthy showdown when these two Humble ISD rivals meet.
Atascocita edged Kingwood in a 27-20 win at Turner Stadium.
It marked the sixth straight year Atascocita has defeated Kingwood.
Atascocita’s T.J. Thomas had a nice night in the backfield with 24 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown. It wasn’t as close last year when Atascocita won 63-7.
Atascocita is off into the bye week while Kingwood meets Pasadena Rayburn.
Howard ends Aldine’s drought
Aldine snapped a 21-game losing streak dating back to the 2016 season with Friday’s 41-27 win over Sam Houston.
That’s not the story. Aldine quarterback Jacorey Howard is. Howard rushed for 451 yards and five touchdowns on 23 carries to help Aldine snap the skid.
Aldine’s offense is run heavy but even then, that’s a stat line that will make any eyes pop.
Howard should be in the running for every Athlete of the Week honor out there for this week’s performance.
Galls half full for Katy in 63-0 rout
It’s not often one sees 10 carries for 199 yards and five touchdowns — in the first half.
It’s what Katy running back Deondrick Galls tallied in Katy’s 63-0 win over Aguilas Blancas. The Tigers led 56-0 in the first half.
Aguilas Blancas is one of a handful of Mexican high school football teams crossing the border for a preseason slate of the best Texas has to offer.
It doesn’t get much better than Katy, which has bounced back from a season-opening loss to North Shore with a nail-biting win over Atascocita and now this week’s win.
Next week is a trip to Webster to see old friend Craig Dailey and a tough Clear Springs team.
Wet weather puts dent in Week 3
Persistent rain in the area reshuffled Week 3 for a few teams. A few teams had to switch sites.
Caney Creek’s road game at Vidor turned into a home date on Thursday because Vidor’s field was unplayable.
Clear Brook and Angleton’s Friday game got moved up a day as did the Brazosport-Edna match up.
The Wheatley-Galveston Ball game was canceled entirely and will not be made up.
Aside from a few games with wet conditions, Friday night went on with little interference from Mother Nature.
South Houston off to best start in 43 years
Gas cost 44 cents per gallon in 1975. That was the last time South Houston started a season 3-0 — until Thursday.
The Trojans dominated Pasadena 51-14 on Thursday and their 2018 season suddenly has the makings of a special one. South Houston quarterback Torrence Stevens completed 12 of 18 passes for 241 yards and four scores and he rushed for 119 yards and two touchdowns on just three rushes.
The Trojans’ other two wins are over Clear Falls and Goose Creek Memorial.
Want an under-the-radar game of the week for Week 4? Humble and South Houston meet with both teams at 3-0.
Dekaney, Ridge Point seeking turnaround
It’s fair to say no two teams in Houston would love a reprieve from last week more than Ridge Point and Dekaney.
They meet at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hall Stadium. Ridge Point lost to North Shore 44-0 last week. The Panthers haven’t seen many of those kinds of deficits in their short history.
Dekaney was on the wrong end of Kingwood’s 20-0 comeback last week. Dekaney lost 23-20.
The good vibes will return around Saturday’s winner.
