CRUISE SHIPS TAKE GUESTS AWAY FROM EVERYDAY CARES

From pirates to trains and submarines, Galveston has a rich and colorful history. Memorabili­a and artifacts at museums, libraries, parks, and collection­s from long ago bring this vibrant past to life.

The Railroad Museum boasts one of the largest restored railroad collection­s in the Southwest. It has numerous railroad memorabili­a and exhibits, including more than 40 pieces of locomotive­s and rolling stock.

“Visitors enjoy exploring our dining car china collection, extensive model train layouts, and 5-acre railyard. The museum is especially lively on Saturdays, when we offer caboose rides from 11 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.,” said Sam Christense­n, curator, Galveston Railroad Museum.

At the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum and Education Center, visitors can board the retired jackup drilling rig and see models and also see interactiv­e displays about the offshore oil and gas industry.

The Rosenberg Library is the oldest public library in Texas in continuous operation. It displays artifacts pertaining to Galveston and early Texas and paintings of Galveston subjects.

At The Bryan Museum, visitors can discover the story of Texas and the Old West with its collection of historical artifacts.

Seawolf Park is home to the USS Cavalla, a WWII submarine, and the USS Stewart, a destroyer escort. It also has a fishing pier and picnic sites available for visitors.

Those who want to learn about adventures on the high seas and the rich history of seaborne commerce and immigratio­n should stop by the Texas Seaport Museum, home of the 1877 Tall Ship Elissa.

Pirates! Legends of the Gulf Coast is a pirate-themed experience where visitors can learn about the legends, myths and stories of the adventurou­s buccaneers.

The history of the entire County of Galveston is held within the collection­s of the Galveston County Museum.
