Senate choice offers challenge to Texans

Losing a seat to the likes of O’Rourke would slow the progress our country has made under Trump

My, how times have changed. Once rivals, President Donald Trump and U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz are now fighting together against the biggest challenge to Republicans in Texas since the days of Lyndon B. Johnson.

As Democrats continue their absolutist strategy against the GOP, President Trump demonstrates greater valor by putting old rivalries firmly in the past. As a leader, the president is proving he’s quick to forgive but even quicker to put America’s interests first.

One of the unsung successes in politics this year, in fact, has been the way that the GOP has united behind the leadership of President Trump. This unity was reflected in the president’srecent tweet when he wrote, “I will be doing a major rally for Senator Ted Cruz in October. I’m picking the biggest stadium in Texas we can find. As you know, Ted has my complete and total Endorsement.”

Together, Trump and Cruz know that losing a Senate seat in Texas to the likes of Beto O’Rourke would not only intensify the division in Washington, but also could even slow all the progress our country has made since Trump took office.

Texas can’t let that happen. That’s because the Republican Party under Trump’s leadership is producing real results that are improving the lives of all Americans.

Despite a tough and competitive primary campaign in 2016, Trump and Cruz have become close allies in their efforts to make America great again.

After endorsing then-candidate Trump in the fall of 2016, Cruz hit the campaign trail to rally support for the Republican nominee. He made calls to voters and gave speeches with then-Gov. Mike Pence in states like Missouri and Iowa.

The former rivals put their differences aside to prevent the nightmare of a Hillary Clinton presidency from becoming a reality, and they’re continuing to do everything possible to further the president’s successful record of achievement. Since Trump took office, Cruz has been a stalwart defender of the America-first agenda in the Senate. “I’ve been proud to lead the effort to bring Republicans together,” Cruz said last month. According to Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Cruz “has become a confidant who gets the job done for the President of the United States.” “He is the go-to guy… He’s the guy who’s the leader in the Senate, without question,” Patrick added.

Cruz has “worked shoulder to shoulder with this president every step of the way,” Vice President Pence said at a dinner in Sugar Land, calling him “one of the most clarion, unapologetic and courageous conservative voices” in America.

The proof of this alliance is also seen in Cruz’s voting record.

He’s voted over 90 percent of the time with Trump, supporting the president’s pro-middle class Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, and he introduced legislation to fund Trump’s border wall and defund sanctuary cities that shelter criminal illegal immigrants.

Yet, while the Republican Party is unifying and delivering on its promises to the American people, the Democrats are drowning in discord.

They still can’t accept that Trump won the election, and their feverish resistance has fractured their party on multiple levels. While some scream for impeachment, cooler heads try to soften the tone, but to no avail.

Trump and Cruz have put the past behind them and come together to protect our borders, keep our neighborhoods safe and ensure our economy continues to thrive. We must protect our progress and prevent Democrat division from interfering with the benefits America is gaining from the leadership of the Trump-led Republican Party.
