Brewers close in on wild-card spot

ST. LOUIS — Christian Yelich homered and drove in six runs, and surging Milwaukee hurt St. Louis’ playoff chances with a 12-4 victory over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.

Ryan Braun went deep twice as Milwaukee won for the fifth time in six games.

The Cardinals fell one-half game behind the Rockies for the second NL wild card. The Brewers lead Colorado by 3½ games for the top wild card and are a half game behind the NL Central-leading Cubs in the division race.

ROCKIES 10, PHILLIES 3: David Dahl homered for a second straight night, and Colorado vaulted into the lead for the final NL wild-card spot by beating Philadelph­ia at Denver. The Rockies moved a half game in front of St. Louis for the second wild card. Colorado trails the NL West-leading Dodgers by one game.

PIRATES 6, CUBS 0: Pittsburgh’s Chris Archer struck out nine in six innings at Chicago. The Cubs saw their division lead cut to a half game over Milwaukee.

YANKEES 9, RAYS 2: Struggling Gary Sanchez drove in four runs for the first time since early April, Luis Severino won his 19th game, and New York beat host Tampa Bay to trim its magic number to secure homefield in the AL wild-card game to four.

DIAMONDBAC­KS 4, DODGERS 3: Eduardo Escobar’s walkoff home run to lead off the ninth gave host Arizona the win. BRAVES 7, METS 3: Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a go-ahead single as NL East champion Atlanta won at New York. WHITE SOX 5, INDIANS 4: Daniel Palka’s walkoff tworun single in the ninth lifted the White Sox at Chicago. ANGELS 4, RANGERS 1: Shohei Ohtani drove in one run and scored another as the host Angels won. NATIONALS 9, MARLINS 4: Max Scherzer became the 17th pitcher since 1900 to strike out 300 batters in a season during host Washington’s victory over Miami. TIGERS 4, TWINS 2: Harold Castro’s first career hit started an eighth-inning rally that led Detroit to a road win. ROYALS 4, REDS 3: Hunter Dozier led off the ninth with a tie-breaking homer to lift visiting Kansas City.
