Cheery way to start day

EggHaus Gourmet gets in on the breakfast game.

THE CONCEPT

A breakfast-centric, fastcasual restaurant from Philipp Sitter, co-founder of King’s Biergarten in Pearland and King’s BierHaus in Houston.

THE SPACE

Next door to BierHaus in the Heights, EggHaus is a cheery place, full of light and color. White tile walls lend a clean look, broken by eyeopening pops of yellow, live plants and vines, and floral wallpaper. Sitter teamed up with Austin designer Kim Lewis, known for her work on ABC’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” to create a look for the 2,000-square-foot restaurant.

THE FOOD

The building blocks of a Houston breakfast are in play here: kolaches (fillings range from housemade sausage and traditional fruit to vegetarian options and specialty versions with barbacoa or pulled pork); egg sandwiches (the Hangover Sandwich, for example, has shredded chicken simmered in lager, lettuce, tomato, queso fresco and avocado ranch sauce on a warm potato bun) and breakfast tacos. The kitchen uses preservative-free breads, cage-free eggs, nonGMO tortillas and makes its own jams and salsas.

THE DRINKS

Nespresso coffee and a matcha program get the day going. Flavored lattes, too (horchata, rose and lavender). No beer or wine, but customers who want to do some heavy stein lifting can head to BierHaus next door.

THE WORD

There is life beyond beers and brats, said Sitter, who plans on expanding the EggHaus brand and launching a catering program: “It was a break away from my mold and growing up as a restaurateur.”
