UT quarterback Ehlinger nursing sprained shoulder
AUSTIN — Follow-up tests Sunday confirmed that Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger has a sprained throwing shoulder.
Ehlinger left the Longhorns’ 23-17 victory over Baylor on Saturday on Texas’ first possession of the game and did not return. He had taken a couple of hits on runs on the Longhorns’ opening drive. Shane Buechele replaced him and passed for 184 yards and a touchdown to lead Texas to the win.
School officials said an MRI exam confirmed the initial sprain diagnosis. Ehlinger will rest his shoulder this week as No. 7 Texas (6-1, 4-0 Big 12) has an open date and does not play again until Oct. 27 at Oklahoma State.
Ehlinger had passed for 1,534 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 230 yards and six touchdowns while taking every snap of the season until he got hurt. He has not thrown an interception in his last 168 pass attempts, which is a school record.
Bowling Green dismisses Jinks
Bowling Green fired coach Mike Jinks midway through his third season, with the Falcons winless against Football Bowl Subdivision competition.
Athletic director Bob Moosbrugger announced the move and said defensive coordinator Carl Pelini, the former head coach at Florida Atlantic, will be interim coach.
Jinks was 7-24 with Bowling Green, and the team appeared to be sliding backward. The Falcons won four games in 2016, two last season and are 1-6 after falling 42-35 at home to Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan on Saturday.
Bowling Green’s only victory this season was against Eastern Kentucky, a Football Championship Subdivision school. The Falcons are second-to-last among 130 FBS teams in points allowed, averaging 47.6 per game.
Jinks, 46, was a successful high school coach in Texas before spending three seasons as an assistant at Texas Tech. He was hired by Bowling Green after the 2015 season. He was in the third season of a five-year contract and will be owed about $950,000 by the school.
Bowling Green plays at Ohio next Saturday.
Minnesota RB Brooks arrested
Minnesota Gophers running back Shannon Brooks was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic assault.
The Star Tribune reported that the 22-year-old senior was arrested at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Minneapolis and was booked into the Hennepin County jail.
Police spokeswoman Sgt. Darcy Horn said the arrest occurred on the same block near campus where Brooks lives.
Brooks, who has more than 2,500 all-purpose yards in his career, is working his way back from a knee injury. He traveled to Columbus, Ohio, for Saturday’s game with Ohio State but did not play.
