REPORT CARD
B Overall
The Texans scraped rock bottom but managed to pull away, giving them a three-game winning streak entering the next game at Jacksonville.
Quarterback C
Deshaun Watson played hurt and had the worst game of his pro career. Protection was awful — he was sacked seven times. He threw for 177 yards, one TD pass and had two interceptions, including one in the end zone.
Running backs C
Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue combined for 22 carries and 72 yards — a 3.3 average per carry. It was not all their fault because it is hard to run when you have nowhere to run on most of your carries.
Receivers C-
DeAndre Hopkins led the team with five catches and scored the only offensive touchdown. No other receiver had more than three receptions. Three tight ends combined for one catch and 6 yards.
Offensive line F-
This was the worst performance of the season by the linemen. Tackles Kendall Lamm and Julién Davenport couldn’t handle the Bills’ speed pass rushers. The run blocking was mediocre.
Defensive line B
J.J. Watt recorded his seventh sack when he beat a double-teaming tackle and guard. D.J. Reader had a tackle for loss. The linemen put good pressure on the quarterbacks and played the run well.
Linebackers B+
Benardrick McKinney had a sack. He and Zach Cunningham combined for 24 tackles. Jadeveon Clowney had a tackle for loss when he pulled down running back Chris Ivory by his hair for a 3-yard loss.
Secondary A
Johnathan Joseph had a pick-6 to win the game, and Kareem Jackson had an interception on the Bills’ last drive to secure the victory. They combined for nine tackles and six passes broken up.
Special teams A+
Brennan Scarlett recovered a muffed punt to set up a touchdown and recovered a punt blocked by Tyrell Adams to set up a field goal. Coverage was superb. Bills averaged 2.7 yards on punt returns and 14.3 on kickoff returns.
Coaching B
Old ugly is better than old nothing. The offense was awful. The defense was excellent and special teams exceptional.
