Red zone continues to be issue

- Aaron Wilson

The Texans remain one of the worst red-zone offenses in the NFL.

They rank 31st in red-zone offense, scoring a touchdown 34.6 percent of the time they reach opponents’ 20-yard line.

Over the past two weeks, both wins, the Texans are a combined 2-for-10 in the red zone.

“We’re in there, but we’re not getting anything done,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “We just have to continue to work at it and figure out what we can do to get the ball in the end zone because it’s not getting done right now.”

During their win Sunday over the Buffalo Bills, the Texans were forced to settle for a field goal after having a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line.

During that sequence, running back Alfred Blue was tackled for a loss of one yard, wide receiver Keke Coutee was tackled for a loss of one yard, offensive tackle Kendall Lamm committed a false start, and Deshaun Watson threw incomplete to tight end Ryan Griffin on third down.

Clowney adds to penalty total

As prolific as outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney can be as a run-stopper and pass rusher, he’s also piling up some unwanted statistics.

Clowney has been penalized eight times this season, including two taunting penalties, two offsides calls, two neutral zone infractions and an encroachment flag.

He was penalized for offsides and taunting Sunday.

“Guys that play like he does — he plays the game in a really attacking way, and so people are going to use their cadence against him and he’s just got to be really focused on that,” Texans coach Bill O’Brien said. “Then, the taunting call, like somebody asked me if I’m going to — yeah, I’ll talk to him about it, but I’m not going to go down the road of what.

“I think he just was just kind of messing around with the guy, but you can’t do that. We’ll make sure that he knows not to do that anymore.”

Ferguson signed to practice squad

The Texans signed running back Josh Ferguson to their practice squad and cut defensive back Robert Jackson from the practice squad.

Ferguson played two seasons with the Colts, rushing for 25 yards on 16 carries and catching 23 passes for 152 yards.
