Gunnell sets state passing record

- Adam Coleman

St. Pius X quarterback Grant Gunnell became the all-time leader in career passing yards in Texas high school football on Friday night.

The Arizona commitment did so in a home date against Concordia Lutheran, bringing his total up to 14,577 yards, which passes the 14,408 in the 2011-2014 campaigns from Booker’s Hunter Lile.

Gunnell finished 21-of-31 for 487 yards and five touchdowns in the 34-14 win.

Gunnell, who’s been on the varsity team since 2015, entered the night at 174 career touchdown passes as well. He is now eight away from breaking the record of 186, owned by Refugio’s Travis Quintanilla.

St. Pius has two more regularseason games and the TAPPS playoffs remaining, giving Gunnell ample time to continue etching his name in the state record books.

Weather doesn’t stop Jersey Village

Jersey Village led Cypress Falls, 23-9 in the third quarter of a huge District 17-6A clash when rainy weather and lightning halted the game.

The game didn’t resume until one hour and 43 minutes later.

No worries. It didn’t rain on Jersey Village’s parade after the Falcons’ 23-15 win. Now one of the area’s more noteworthy playoff droughts is over. Jersey Village hadn’t been to the playoffs since 2006.

The weather was a recurring theme across the Houston-area with a few games even being called early — St. Thomas-San Antonio Antonian and St. Pius X-Concordia Lutheran among them.

Summer Creek and Kingwood were waiting out until close to midnight to restart its delay.

Kinkaid and Episcopal played to a 7-7 tie, which ended because of the weather.

Not all showdowns are created equal

Few would have picked Deer Park and C.E. King to get in a shootout.

But it happened anyway. The two teams made it clear what kind of game it would be that kind of night by halftime with C.E. King leading 41-40. C.E. King went on to win 55-48 — yes, just 22 points combined between the two teams in the second half.

There were three touchdowns within 28 seconds of each other in the second quarter of this game.

The antithesis of this one, of course, was the Tompkins-Morton Ranch game, which ended in a 15-8 win for Tompkins. Morton Ranch led just 2-0 at halftime.

Klein Collins suffers first loss of the year

Klein Collins fell from the ranks of the undefeated with Klein’s triumph in a 14-13 win Friday.

Klein Collins — ranked No. 2 in this week’s Houston media high school football poll - is no stranger to winning low-scoring games. The Bearkats came out on winning end this time and are in the thick of the 15-6A playoff race because of it.

Ridge Point bests Travis in shootout

In another shootout that involves a Fort Bend ISD team, Ridge Point bested Travis in a 49-42 win.

Ridge Point’s only loss? That came to North Shore back in Week 2. The Panthers will have a tough path to travel when the playoffs arrive but another district title is within reach.

Santa Fe takes down Crosby in stunner

Shocking wins were a recurring theme Friday night and this is certainly a notable one: Santa Fe defeated Crosby in a 27-20 win.

Through all the hardship the Santa Fe community had gone through for the last few months, the Indians have a shot at the playoffs for the first time since 2009.
