Mustangs remain undefeated

- By Meshach Sullivan

Unbeaten North Shore dominated Beaumont West Brook 55-7 on Friday night at Galena Park ISD Stadium to hand the Bruins their first District 21-6A loss of the season.

“They were just able to stop the run,” West Brook coach Eric Peevey said. “We just had mistakes on our part, the bad snaps on offense and a couple penalties here and there. Defensively, I thought we had players where we needed them, but tackling was a different story.”

North Shore (8-0, 5-0 in 21-6A) put West Brook (6-2, 4-1) away early in the second quarter and showed the Bruins why the Mustangs are the state’s second-ranked team.

“It was a challenge,” North Shore coach Jon Kay said. “I think those guys are well-coached. We had some things go our way and it kind of snowballed. But I promise you it was a fight every step of the way. I think those guys have a great future ahead of them for the rest of season.”

West Brook’s defense played well to begin the game as they made North Shore’s offense go threeand-out on their first drive.

“Our kids played hard and there wasn’t any quit in any of them,” Peevey said. “I know you look at the score (and think we quit), no they are just a good ball team.”

North Shore’s offense was ignited by running back Zach Evans. He broke a tackle on his third carry of the game and scampered 66 yards for a touchdown. Evans finished with 105 yards rushing and three touchdowns on just eight carries.

After West Brook thwarted North Shore’s next possession, the Mustangs rattled off three second-quarter touchdown drives behind quarterback Dematrius Davis to take a commanding 28-0 lead into halftime.

For the night, Davis completed 13 of 14 passes for 253 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

The second half was much of the same for North Shore and West Brook. North Shore scored quick touchdowns in the third quarter to put any suspense to rest.

This game was anticipated to the only test for West Brook in district action. And what test it was as the Mustangs limited the Bruins to 197 yards of offense. West Brook fumbled seven times and lost two.

North Shore, which was forced to punt only once in the game, pulled its starters early in the third quarter.

West Brook scored a touchdown with 47 seconds left in the game.

The snap from the center for West Brook was a problem for Bruins all game long. It also didn’t help quarterback L’Raven Elia that North Shore’s defense was bearing down on him on almost every play. In the first half alone, West Brook had three botched snaps.

“I feel our quarterback L’Raven played his tail off,” Peevey said. “He took a beating tonight and he just kept playing.”

Elia was 7 for 11 for 60 yards through the air. He contributed 33 yards on the ground.
