Meet Marissa and other pets worthy of adoption.
Sweet Marissa is a survivor, but the 1-year-old, 30-pound pit-mix should be angry.
She was found as a stray with scars on her back that appear to be from a chemical burn or, worse, from road rash, which is a skin condition caused by being dragged along pavement or concrete.
Still, Marissa is a bundle of tail-wagging affection. She enjoys being petted and sitting on laps. She also still has the youngpuppy personality. (Did we mention that she’s sweet as pie?)
Harris County Animal Shelter has launched a cruelty investigation in Marissa’s case, but finding who did this to her is difficult since she’s a stray. Her wounds, they say, will heal. She’s on pain medication and will need a home with lots of TLC.
Marissa is available for adoption along with about 100 dogs and nearly 140 cats at the shelter.
On Sunday, Lance McCullers Foundation and PetSet sponsored the transportation of 100 dogs from the Harris County facility to northern Virginia, where the pups will be adopted out in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania and Virginia.
To adopt, visit the Harris County Animal Shelter at 612 Canino in Houston. View animals online at CountyPets.com. Adoption fees range from $10 to $80 per pet. The shelter is open weekdays 1-6 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m.- 4 p.m.
