DIANA LEARMONTH MITCHELL

1926-2018

-

A quick wit and sharp mind to the end, Diana departed this life in the comfort of her home surrounded by family and friends. She made sure she lived deep before she left.

Born and raised in Australia on a sheep station, Diana spent her youth riding horses and exploring. Elegant, stylish, and six feet, she caught the eye of an American and moved to New York. Diana had to give up the glamour of NYC when her husband was exiled to Houston as counsel for Exxon.

Diana grew to love Houston and was involved with arts and civic organizations. Her most important volunteer role was in the Lamar High School attendance office to ensure son Jamie did not skip class. In addition to Jamie, she doted on a long succession of dogs, mostly dachshunds, Maltilda, known as Tilly, and her successor Lilly, more often called Tilly Too.

With her distinct accent, she volunteered at Lighthouse for the Blind and read the news where her colorful commentary and political punditry stirred both delight and consternation. An avid reader, Sundays were spent reading every inch of the New York Times and the Houston Chronicle. Her passing may leave the Chronicle with no more print subscribers.

Diana is survived by her son Jamie, his wife Stephanie, grandson Aaron and nephew Thomas Mitchell. She leaves her sister Robin Paton, nephew Matthew-daughters Harriet, Julia, brother Peter Learmonth and wife Paula in Australia. She presided over a cohort of many loyal friends who stopped by to share a tipple and tidbits of news. The family wishes to thank the many caregivers, especially Marie and Damaris, who allowed her to stay in her home. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband Henry.

A celebration of her life will be held on November 8, 2018, St. Bede’s Chapel, Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the Dachshund Rescue of Houston.
