Walker lifts Hornets over Hawks; Mavs hammer Wizards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kemba Walker had 29 points and seven assists, extending his strong start to the season as the Charlotte Hornets beat the Atlanta Hawks 113-102 on Tuesday night.

Marvin Williams added 20 points for the Hornets, who won for the third time on a four-game homestand. Walker has scored 25 or more seven times in 11 games.

Playing against his former team, Jeremy Lin had 19 points off the bench to lead the Hawks, who led by seven late in the first half.

The young Hawks started 2018 first-round draft picks Trae Young, Kevin Huerter and Omari Spellman for the first time this season and pushed Charlotte before losing for the eighth time in the last nine meetings.

Young finished with 18 points and 10 assists. Kent Bazemore added 16 points.

MAVS 119, WIZARDS 100

Luka Doncic scored 23 points, and Dennis Smith Jr. made three key plays down the stretch as Dallas ended a six-game losing streak by beating visiting Washington.

It was the Mavericks’ 16th win in their last 17 meetings with the Wizards. Wesley Matthews added 22 points for Dallas, and Harrison Barnes had 19 points and 13 rebounds.

BLAZERS 118, BUCKS 103

CJ McCollum scored 40 points, and Portland handed visiting Milwaukee its second loss in 10 games this season.

Giannis Antetokoun­mpo led Milwaukee with 23 points and nine rebounds. Brook Lopez shot 6 for 10 from 3-point range and finished with 22 points.

NETS 104, SUNS 82

Caris LeVert scored 26 points, D’Angelo Russell added 15, and Brooklyn won at Phoenix.

LAKERS SIGN CHANDLER

Veteran center Tyson Chandler signed with the Los Angeles Lakers two days after reaching a buyout agreement with the Phoenix Suns.

Chandler will provide needed frontcourt depth for the Lakers, who have relied on JaVale McGee and undersized forwards to guard big men during their 4-6 start to the season.

Chandler, 36, is joining his seventh team early in his 18th season in the league. He won a championsh­ip ring with Dallas in 2011, and he was the NBA’s defensive player of the year with New York in 2012 before earning an All-Star selection in 2013.

IRVING FINED $25,000

Boston Celtics point guard Kyrie Irving was fined $25,000 by the NBA for throwing a basketball into the stands after a game. The incident occurred at the end of the Celtics’ 115-107 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Monday night.

Irving was mad that Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray took a 3-point-shot with the clock winding down when Denver already had put away the game. Murray, who already had scored 48 points, said he was trying to reach 50.

Oklahoma City star Russell Westbrook will miss Wednesday’s game against Cleveland because of a sprained left ankle. … Cavaliers forward Sam Dekker could be out a month with a sprained left ankle. Dekker, who played for the Rockets from 201517, got hurt during the third quarter of a loss at Orlando on Monday night.
